(in our seats at the Castro last Saturday night to watch "Parineeta," part of the Asian American Film Festival)
Non-desi friend: I'm really looking forward to this movie. I don't know what to expect.
Sobriquette*: Did you see "Bend it Like Beckham?"
NDF: Oh yeah!! I loved it!!!
Sobriquette: Well, it's nothing like that.
(maisnon's laughter is drowned out by the rising crescendo of organ music and cheering.)

Did you like it? I saw it on the plane back from India
so did I Ennis! Actually, and on the plane too. :-D
So did you, did you? I kinda did, actually. There was something genuinely cute about it.
I saw Bride and Prejudice (another movie that is nothing like anything that would have been in the Asian American Phil-lim Festival) at the Dupont theater and let me tell you:
Shame thy name was Barmaid upon my exit. Having to explain that those song and dance sequences were actually (sort of) mocking real Indian song and dance sequences? Kind of humiliating, I'm not going to lie.
Mmm... I didn't like it that much, but I think we can lay this one on expecting too much. I found both main characters to be SO one-dimensional, i.e. incredibly virtuous, and all-around beloved girl, and spoiled, rich brat (WHY would anyone be into him???) Ick.
I think the 6-hour BBC version of Pride and Prejudice is the best it's ever going to get. Aishwarya Rai, you are no Lizzie Bennett.
