Friday worked at a dot.com back in the day, and had a table that it adorned with haikus written by coworkers. A selection:
Goth club
black black black black black
black black black black black black black
black black black black black
dreaded 404
error: cannot find page
the web is not mine
billy dee, muse
Oh, Colt 45
divine amber pungent brew
Sooth my ailing soul.
Fishing is alright
But you mostly just stand there.
I guess you could sit.

Lunatic fringe
I have typed in and lost three posts now. I'm taking it as a sign that I'm long overdue for a haiku movie review.

Stunningly filmed, but
Ripped men in leather speedos
Make me think “gay porn”
The Namesake
My family’s story
In many ways, but
…. Bengali, of course

Basho
I have mad love for the haiku. I love the delicate balance of it all: the dance of syllables, the threads of meaning in the pauses. I have come to think that this is something I get from my mother. Behold - the incisive guilt-induction by ma mere:
Wow. Check the precision on that - not an ounce wasted! My moms got skillz, yo.
I will be anxious until you come back. Hope you will be able to contact us
now and then.

5-7-5: heretofore, pertinent, and apposite
As y'all know, I love me some haiku.
As part of some random, alcohol-inspired rambling with Chai, I decided to try my hand at summing up key legal decisions in the traditional 5-7-5 format:
I invite the J.D.s, the wannabes, and the syllabically-inclined to have at it. Korematsu, Lawrence, Miranda .... so many options!
Update:
Decided to write a few IP ones (actually Barbie Girl is also IP - has to do with parody, copyright law, etc.):
Patent:
Key patent law case:
Diamond v. Chakrabarty
Can you patent cells?
But not really cells….
Fine – microorganisms
Supreme Court says, “Yes.”
Copyright:
Sony Betamax:
Copyright infringement claims,
Held for defendants
“Non-infringing use”
Non-commercial, ‘time-shifting’
Fair use defense works.
Trademark:
Yup, sometime the geek just LEAPS off the screen, doesn't it?

Separate is not equal
Segregation sucks
"parties are advised to chill"
says Judge Kozinksi

Haiku Movie Review
Thank You for Smoking
Quick, black comedy
DC lobbying done “right”
Katie Holmes – why? WHY?
The Inside Man

Clive Owen hidden
That’s a travesty, I say
But – you GO, Spike Lee
Out of Africa
Michael Ondaatje:
You stole scenes from this film for
The English Patient
NB:
(1) See here for previous haiku movie review.
(2) Ondaatje is a fellow Queen's alum.
(3) The Katie Holmes (I mean... Kate Cruise) article is much more extensively footnoted than you'd expect!

Movie Review as Haiku
George Clooney with gut,
Sharp, scathing commentary
I say, "Two thumbs up!"
Who understands it?
(David Lynch at his weirdest)
Certainly not me
